We love developers and wanted to build an open platform to help you build great video-chat applications. We've already proven it's a hit in Facebook Courses which has implemented our video-chat for "Course Chat" and "Study Groups". But this is just the beginning...
We've thought of all kinds of cool apps that we could build on top of our video-chat application, but we realized there's not enough time in the day to do them all. Plus, all the developers on the Internet at large have more raw, creative, collective horsepower than we could ever hope to have.
So David was coding one day and said to Joseph, "Geez, I wish we had the time to build a live speed dating app, and a live language instruction app, and a live study groups app, and a live poker app, and..."
And Joseph interrupted... "Dude, we've got our hands full getting all this video-chat stuff in shape so that it can scale and we won't let down our users."
But David, being somewhat business-minded said, "But whoever builds these apps is going to make some serious bling-bling!"
And Joseph said, "Yes, so if we build it... they will come!"By the way... it's kinda crazy, but we think this should probably be free for developers.
So we rolled out an API for Vawkr which allows any third party app developers to create and use Vawkr powered rooms for their applications and found the Courses guys on Facebook were really excited to be the first to use Vawkr. In fact, we made it so easy, that they were up and running within 15 minutes of having shown them Vawkr. Install the courses application on Facebook and check it out: Courses On Facebook
Things that we'll do...
- Provide reliable, scalable, loadbalanced infrastructure for all your video-communication apps.
- Provide backend IM, SMS signaling to help your users better find out when something interesting is happening in your app!
- Continually improve our API based on your feedback!
So here's what you can do with Vawkr.
- Include 1 or more video chat rooms in your app. The courses app has literally hundreds of rooms, one for each course!
- Show the names of the various participants. Your app (or FBML) can tell the names in a parameterized way so that your users will never have to register with us. Pretty cool!
- Provide static images of each participant (think, profile picture in FBML) in case they don't have a webcam.
- Reconfigure the dimensions of your room to fit your application. Check out how it looks on a blog! Vawkr Blog
- Reconfigure the themes of your room to fit the look and feel of your application.
