What was Camzap?

Camzap was a random webcam chat site from around 2010, part of the wave that followed Chatroulette. You opened the page, turned on your cam, and were paired with a stranger. If it was dull or weird, you clicked through to the next one. No accounts, no profiles, no rules to read first.

The appeal was the randomness. You never knew who was next: someone bored in another time zone, someone showing off a guitar, someone who only wanted to say hi and move on. It was fast, it was free, and it asked nothing of you.

As far as we can tell, it is no longer a working service. Searches for it now come from people who remember the format and want it back, ideally with fewer of the problems that came with it.

What does a good Camzap replacement need today?

The button-and-a-stranger idea holds up. The surroundings needed work:

• Moderation. A way to report someone that actually ends the connection and reaches a human.
• Mobile. Back then you needed a computer with a webcam; now it has to work on a phone.
• No signup, still. Adding an account would kill the whole point.
• Filters. Some say in who you meet, without turning it into a dating profile.
• Real video between real visitors, not a loop and not a bot.

How do you start on Vawkr?

1. Open vawkr.com in your browser. Nothing to install, on a phone or a computer.
2. Pick your gender, your age, and whether you want to chat with women or men.
3. Confirm you are 18 or over.
4. Allow the camera and microphone when asked. Every chat has live video.
5. You are paired with a stranger. Talk, type in the text box, or send an emoji reaction.
6. Next for a new person, Stop to end. No cap, no timer.

That is the Camzap loop with the rough edges filed off. The lobby is shared with a wider network of sites, so the next face could be from anywhere. If you want a walk-through first, the free cam chat page has one. If not, the chat is right there.

How do reporting and karma filters work?

Reporting is one tap. Above the other person's video there is a flag. Tap it, pick a reason, and the connection ends immediately. A still frame goes to human moderators, and Block is on by default, so you are never paired with that person again. Repeat offenders are banned. Everyone confirms they are 18 or over before the chat.

Karma is the filter system. You earn points for chatting and for coming back, and you spend them on matching filters for gender and country. No account is needed to earn them, but an optional free account keeps your karma across devices.

A last note on privacy. Video and audio travel between the two browsers, directly where the connection allows and otherwise through an encrypted relay that keeps nothing, and nothing is recorded or stored. Two limits remain: with a direct connection the other person may see your IP address, and anything on screen can be recorded by the person watching.
